Epiphany of Our Lord
Pre-K Three Program

Philosophy: The three year old program is primarily focused on social and language development, though not exclusively so. During the year we will strive to encourage the spiritual, intellectual, social/emotional, and physical growth of our students through a variety of both formal and informal activities. The following is a brief description of the ways each area will be addressed:

Spiritual Development: The religion curriculum is based on the guidelines released by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The guidelines include themes written to encourage the development of each child?s God-given spirituality through learning about our religious beliefs and celebrating our liturgical holy days. Though our schedule prohibits attendance at weekly liturgy, we will visit the church and hope to be visited by the liturgical staff of Epiphany of Our Lord Church.

Intellectual Development: Learning will be based on a series of themes related to both the secular and liturgical calendar as well as concepts that will promote intellectual development. These themes are developed to broaden the knowledge and experiences of the growing child to include more of the world around them. Additionally, shape, number and color recognition, and fine motor development will be specifically addressed this year. Finally, continued development of expressive language skills will be encouraged through the use of prayers, songs, finger plays, and stories.

Social/Emotional Development: Children will learn appropriate peer interactions through closely monitored free play time in the classroom?s many centers. The teacher(s) will use this time to role model friendly behavior, label children?s feelings, and teach problem-solving strategies.

Physical Development: Activities will be included each day to provide children opportunities to develop and extend newly discovered fine and gross motor skills.

Daily Routine:
? Arrival will be at 8:30. Children will come into the room, hang up their coats and bags and sit down at the tables to do some table top activities while the other children are arriving.

? Circle time will be a time used to open the day with prayer, take attendance, discuss the day?s events, demonstrate the craft project for the day, and review the calendar and weather. A story will be used to introduce the theme for each day.

? Free play/Craft time will allow children a chance to interact and build friendships while small groups of children are invited to complete crafts with teacher guidance.

? Snack/Show and Tell Time will allow opportunities to work on table manners and self-help skills as well as allow children to build language and listening skills as they describe their show and tell object or listen to someone else describe an object.

? Learning Time will be a time that the week?s theme will be shared through the use of finger plays, songs, stories, and many other activities.

? Library, music, and gym will offer a weekly opportunity for the children to move about the school and observe the older students at work. It will also encourage listening skills and familiarity with other faculty members at Epiphany of Our Lord School.

? Departure will be at 11:30.

Parent/Teacher Communication: if you have specific questions, please feel free to contact me via e-mail or during carline. I will be sending home a monthly calendar and a weekly newsletter to keep you informed of our weekly themes, upcoming events, previous week?s highlights, and the words to the songs, finger plays, and prayers that we will be working on. Also found on the calendar are your assigned snack and show and tell day.

Birthdays: We look forward to celebrating your child?s birthday at school. Whenever possible, your child?s birthday or his/her next school day will be your snack day. Summer birthdays will be celebrated throughout the school year.

Birthday parties are great opportunities for children to get together outside of school, however, if you are going to pass out invitations in school, please send enough invitations for all the children of the same gender or the whole class. No one likes to be left out.

Holidays/School Closings: Pre-k follows the school calendar so we will not have class on the days that the school is closed for any reason for the other students of Epiphany of Our Lord School. In the event of bad weather, please listen to KYW 1060 AM for our school number, which is 433.

Clothing: Pre-k can be messy, so please dress your children in play clothes. When the weather cooperates, we will go outside to play, so please dress your child accordingly. If special clothes are required, you will be notified in advance.

Absences: Please notify the school office at 610-825-0160 if your child will be absent from school.

School Hours: Pre-k hours are from 8:30 a.m. ? 11:30 a.m. Please be prompt. However, if you are unavoidably detained, please call the school office at 610-825-0160.
